Chanel 19: Sizes, Materials and Buying Guide

Chanel 19 round black leather bag with gold and silver chain strap and gold CC logo

The Chanel 19 was the last bag Karl Lagerfeld designed. It was unveiled at the Fall/Winter 2019 show in March 2019, finished alongside Virginie Viard, and named for its debut year. Four sizes are documented from the waist bag up to the maxi flap, all built around the same soft structure and mixed-tone chain. Here is the full spec, plus what to check before buying one pre-owned.

What is the Chanel 19?

Lagerfeld designed the 19 as a reimagining of a Chanel classic, paying homage to the 2.55, Coco Chanel's first shoulder bag, whose name comes from its February 1955 debut. The 19 follows the same naming logic: the year it launched. Its body is slouchier than the Classic Flap, with exaggerated diamond quilting and a softer, puffer-like feel. The original version was crafted in smooth goatskin; later seasons brought lambskin, tweed, and other seasonal materials.

What sizes does the Chanel 19 come in?

Size Dimensions (L x W x D)
Waist Bag 4.3" x 7.8" x 2.1"
Wallet on Chain 4.8" x 7.5" x 1.4"
Large Flap Bag 7.8" x 11.7" x 3.9"
Maxi Flap Bag 9.8" x 14" x 4.3"

The lineup starts with the waist bag and the wallet on chain, then steps up through the large flap to the maxi. If you want the classic shoulder look, the large flap is the middle of the range; the maxi is a travel-scale bag.

What is the mixed-tone chain?

The 19's chain shifts tone along its length, moving through gold, silver and darker metal finishes so it reads as neither strictly gold nor silver. The bag carries two chain sections: a short top handle and a longer shoulder strap, so it can be carried in hand with both hanging, or worn over the shoulder. It is the most recognisable detail of the design after the quilting.

Chanel 19 vs Classic Flap

  • Structure: the 19 is slouchy and soft; the Classic Flap is rigid and structured;
  • Quilting: exaggerated and puffy on the 19, classic diamond on the Flap;
  • Chain: mixed-tone metal gradient on the 19; leather-interwoven chain on the Flap;
  • Market: the 19 typically trades below Classic Flap prices pre-owned, and holds value better than seasonal styles.

How do you authenticate a Chanel 19?

Early 19s (2019 to 2021) carry the hologram sticker and authenticity card era system; from 2021 most production moved to the metal chip plaque, which we cover in our microchip guide. Beyond the identifier, check the chain's plating and weight, the interior stamping, and the evenness of the quilting. Ours are checked in-house before they ever reach the site.

What does a Chanel 19 cost pre-owned?

Pricing tracks size, material and condition. The wallet on chain and waist bag sit at the entry point, tweed and specialty finishes price above standard leather, and the large flap is the most in-demand size. Browse our live selection for current examples.

It is the year of its debut: 2019. The same logic names the 2.55, which launched in February 1955.

What sizes does the Chanel 19 come in?

Four documented sizes: waist bag, wallet on chain, large flap and maxi flap, with the large flap the classic shoulder size in the middle of the range.

Is the Chanel 19 goat or lambskin?

The original run was smooth goatskin. Later seasons introduced lambskin and seasonal materials, so both exist on the pre-owned market.
