Gold hardware wears for one of two reasons: tarnish, a chemical film that careful cleaning can sometimes improve, or worn plating, where the gold finish has physically rubbed off. Luxe Bag Spa brush plates select areas with 24k gold, a touch-up service that targets clasps, turn locks, zipper pulls, bag feet and small decorative pieces rather than whole chains.
Why does designer bag hardware fade?
Your hardware deals with a lot every single day: hand oils, hand cream, sanitizer, perfume, humidity and plain friction from being touched constantly. The spots you handle most, such as turn locks, zipper pulls, clasps and chain connectors, are almost always the first to show it. Bag feet take a beating too, since they drag across tables and floors all day. If your gold hardware is starting to look silver, copper or pink underneath, the gold finish has worn through to the metal below.
Tarnish or worn plating: which one is it?
This is the mix-up we see constantly. People call saying their hardware is tarnished, but tarnish and worn plating are two very different problems.
- Tarnish: a chemical reaction that makes the metal look dull or discolored, and a careful professional cleaning can sometimes genuinely improve it;
- Worn plating: the gold colored finish has physically rubbed off. No amount of polishing brings that back, because it is a job for gold plating and hardware restoration;
- Deep scratches: plating adds a thin gold layer on top, it does not rebuild missing metal, so dents and grooves stay visible.
Going at worn hardware aggressively at home can make things worse by stripping away whatever finish is left. Before you attack your hardware with anything, figure out which problem you actually have.
Can faded gold hardware be restored?
For minor areas, often yes. At Luxe Bag Spa, we brush plate select areas with 24k gold for touch-ups: clasps, turn locks, zipper pulls, bag feet, small decorative pieces and accessible edges. Every piece is assessed individually first, because the metal type, its condition and the coating underneath all affect whether plating is the right move. Brush plating applies a thin layer of gold directly to a targeted, accessible area, with no need to submerge or remove the whole component. It is a touch-up tool, not a full metal refinish.
What does gold plating not fix?
Plating does not remove scratches. It adds a thin gold layer on top, and it does not rebuild missing metal or smooth out dents, grooves or deep scratches. Light marks might look less obvious once the color evens out, but real scratches are still going to be visible after plating. Plating fixes color, not damage. Very light surface marks can sometimes be minimized with careful prep, but going too hard with polishing can distort the shape, wipe out engraved details or remove more of the original finish than you meant to. The goal is improvement, not making it look brand new.
Which brands can be replated, and how long does it last?
Hardware restoration is not a one-brand thing. We assess selected pieces across Louis Vuitton, YSL, Gucci, Fendi, Prada and beyond, but the brand on the bag does not automatically tell us what is possible. Different bags, even within the same house, use different metals and coatings, so every piece is judged on its own condition. Attached hardware can sometimes be plated without removing it, since brush plating is applied right to the spot, though the hardware has to be accessible enough to prep safely. Full chains are not included in our current plating services, because chains have too many moving links and contact points, but smaller accessible connectors can sometimes be assessed. How long a replated area lasts depends on how often you use the bag, the friction that spot gets, contact with skin oils, sanitizer, lotion and perfume, and how the bag is stored. A decorative area that barely gets touched will outlast a turn lock you use constantly. Think of plating as a refresh, not a forever fix.
What should you never use on bag hardware?
Please do not use Brasso or household metal polish. Cleaners like Brasso are made for solid metal, not thin designer plating, and they can strip the remaining gold finish, scratch the surface, damage engraved details, leave residue near seams, stain the surrounding leather or leave things looking patchy and uneven. It is especially risky on attached hardware, since the leather or canvas right next to it can get permanently damaged too. One more thing worth knowing before you book any work: restoration is generally something to disclose when you eventually sell, and some owners prefer to leave the wear as it is to preserve originality. Send clear photos first, and we will tell you honestly whether a minor 24k gold brush-plating touch-up makes sense.
Frequently asked questions
Is my bag's hardware tarnished or worn?
Tarnish is a chemical film that professional cleaning can sometimes improve. If the gold color has physically rubbed off, that is worn plating, and only replating brings the color back.
Can Luxe Bag Spa replate a full Chanel chain?
Not currently. Full chains have too many moving links and contact points, though smaller accessible connectors can sometimes be assessed from photos.
Does gold plating remove scratches?
No. Plating adds a thin gold layer that evens out color, but it cannot rebuild metal, so dents and deep scratches remain visible after the service.
Can silver hardware be changed to gold?
A full color change is not part of the current service. It needs extensive prep and even coverage, and it can affect originality and resale value.
If hardware wear is the only thing holding a bag back, Luxe Bag Spa can assess it from photos. For prevention, read our guide to keeping bags scratch and stain free, and browse new arrivals for pieces with hardware in top shape.
