Chanel Microchip: What the NFC Chip Means for Buyers

If you bought a Chanel bag after 2021, there is no authenticity card and no hologram sticker. In their place: a small metal plate with two QR-style codes, the microchip. It is one of the most searched questions in Chanel authentication, and one of the most misunderstood. Here is what the chip is, what it is not, and exactly what to check before you pay for a bag in the chip era.

What the Chanel microchip is

A slim metal plate, roughly credit-card sized, fixed inside the bag with two data panels: one holds the model information, the second is a serialized reference used by Chanel for service. The chip itself is read with boutique equipment, not by shoppers. Its job is the same as the old authenticity card, done in a way that is far harder to copy at scale.

Cards, stickers, chip: the timeline

Era What marks the bag
Up to the 1990s Serial stickers, no chip; early stickers fade and are often missing
2000s to 2021 Hologram sticker plus authenticity card with matching serial
2021 onward Chip plate replaces both on most classics; cards phase out

The change happened gradually through 2021, so a bag from that year can legitimately have a card, a chip, or, on some models, both as stock cleared.

How verification actually works

Chanel boutiques and service centers read the chip directly. For buyers and resellers, verification means matching everything around it: the plate's placement and finish, the codes' formatting, the bag's leather and hardware details, and the story that connects them. Third-party authenticators take photos of the plate along with the usual checks.

Buying in the chip era: what to request

  • Clear photos of both panels of the plate (angles, no glare);
  • The bag's full authenticity photos: stitching, CC turnlock, interior stamping, hardware engravings;
  • A receipt or service record when available; a boutique verification is the strongest proof there is;
  • Patience with "no card". Since 2021 it means nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan the chip with my phone?

No. The chip is read with Chanel's internal tools. Any app promising a "scan" is guessing.

Do all post-2021 bags have the chip?

Most classic leather goods do. The rollout took time, and some lines kept cards longer. A card on an early 2021 bag is not a red flag by itself.

What replaced the authenticity card?

The chip plate, and with it a service-side verification system: less to lose, harder to fake.
