Hermès Kelly vs Birkin: History, Difference, How to Buy

The Hermès Kelly began life in 1923 as the Bugatti, and became the Kelly after Grace Kelly used one to shield her pregnancy from photographers in 1956. The Birkin arrived decades later, sketched after actress Jane Birkin complained to Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight about the lack of a practical luxury bag. One has a single top handle; the other has two. Entry pricing runs from around $10,000 for a Kelly and $8,000 for a Birkin, and both climb into six figures at the top of the market.

Why is the Kelly called the Kelly?

The bag was designed in 1923 by Émile-Maurice Hermès with Ettore Bugatti and sold as the Bugatti. It became a phenomenon in 1956 when Grace Kelly, then the Princess of Monaco, was photographed using it to shield her pregnancy from the press. The public renamed it on the spot; Hermès made it official in 1977. Prices tell the rest of the story: about $1,000 in the 1950s, roughly $10,000 to enter the line today, with ceiling prices far above that.

Why is the Birkin called the Birkin?

Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas shared a flight in the early 1980s where she vented about the difficulty of finding a luxury bag that was both beautiful and genuinely practical for carrying everything. Dumas sketched the answer on the spot: a spacious, unfussy design with two handles and a flap. That starting price of about $8,000 has followed the same curve as the Kelly, and the cultural pull is undimmed: Cardi B, the Kardashians and the Jenners collect them, and Offset famously gifted a $8,000 Birkin to his then two-year-old daughter Kulture.

Which one holds value better?

Both are among the strongest value-retaining bags made, and the difference between them is smaller than the internet suggests. What actually drives performance is size and specification: the smallest sizes (Birkin 25, Kelly 25) and rare leathers outperform large formats on the secondary market. For most buyers, the decision should be carried style first, investment second, and both bags reward condition and provenance above everything else.

How do you actually buy one?

Two routes. The boutique route requires years of relationship building and meaningful spend before an offer might come, and even then nothing is guaranteed; Hermès controls supply tightly on both models. The secondary market is where most buyers land: faster, transparent about condition, and priced at a premium over retail. Buy from a seller who authenticates in house, discloses wear honestly, and stands behind the sale in writing. That is how we sell every piece, and how we will source yours.

Frequently asked questions

Kelly or Birkin first?

If you want a structured, formal bag that transitions to evening, start with the Kelly. If you want an everyday carry that handles more and slouches beautifully over time, start with the Birkin.

What is the cheapest way into either model?

The pre-owned market, in the smallest sizes and more common leathers. Entry sits near $8,000 to $10,000 and moves with condition.

When did the Kelly and Birkin launch?

The Kelly began as the 1923 Bugatti and took its name in 1956; the Birkin was created in 1984 after Jane Birkin's flight with Jean-Louis Dumas.
