Manhattan designer Sarah Coleman turns deconstructed Louis Vuitton bags into furniture, including folding chairs that start around $4,500 USD before you supply the Louis Vuitton piece. She began in July 2018 by reupholstering a vintage armchair with a broken Louis Vuitton suitcase that belonged to her father.
How it started
Coleman reupholstered that first armchair with the suitcase because the zipper was broken and the piece was sitting unused. In a Robb Report interview she described the work as organic: she went for it, and now keeps her eyes open for pieces to repurpose in new ways. The chair became a talking point, then a business, and her work is now available to purchase through her studio's website.
More than chairs
The idea for the folding chair came from a walk downtown, where she spotted a small director's folding chair outside a massage parlour. She worked from that design, then posted her creation on social media, and demand grew from there. Chairs are not the limit: Coleman also creates ottomans, coffee mugs, pill bottles, lighters and vacuum cleaners, all with the same repurposing approach.
What it costs
Pricing depends on what you commission, and a folding chair runs close to $4,500 USD, not including the price of the Louis Vuitton you need to supply. If that sounds like the dream project, remember the source material has to come from somewhere. We always have Louis Vuitton pieces in stock, and ours are for carrying, not cutting. Please do not cut up the Louis Vuitton.
Admire the craft and keep your bags intact with authenticated Louis Vuitton bags and vintage finds.
